Welcome

LWC is an association of writers based in and around Leicester. Many club members are published and all are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in their writing.

The club was founded over 50 years ago, and its many members now span a wide range of writing forms, including poetry, novels, short stories, children's fiction, non-fiction, screenplays and more.

As well as providing advice and friendly, mutual support for each other's writing, the club has a wide access to information on writing competitions, writing courses, events and possible markets.

Membership

How to join:

Membership is open to the following categories of people:

  • Any writer whose work is approved by the club committee
  • Those who have attended 2 years of any course at Writing School Leicester or a similar institution
  • Published writers *

These membership rules are intended to help people find the environment where their writing will develop fastest, either in LWC itself or in Writing School Leicester, with whom we are closely associated.

If you are unsure about any of this, please do get in contact. We would be happy to help.

* Not including vanity publishing.

Activities

LWC meets weekly throughout the year with short breaks during the main holiday periods.

The majority of meetings are 'manuscript evenings' where club members read out and receive feedback on work in progress. During the summer holidays, manuscript evenings are also open to non-members, for a nominal, on the night, fee.

From time to time LWC hosts public talks by writers or people working in the publishing industry. These speaker evenings are open to the public. Where we have sponsorship to cover our costs we are able to provide these events free. At other times a small entrance fee may be charged on the door. This is usually £3 or £2 for concessions.

Meetings take place in:
The Small Hall
Leicester Adult Education College
Wellington Street
Leicester
LE1 6HL

from 7:00 to 9:00, unless indicated otherwise.

LWC organises occasional residential weekend events for its members. In recent years these have taken place in May at an old manor house in the Cotswolds.

LWC also runs a very active e-mail forum.

MAKING A MARK

On May 22nd 2008, the Club celebrated its fiftieth year by publishing its first anthology.

Making a Mark is a tantalising collection of extracts from novels, complete short stories, poems, articles and even a scene from a radio script. It covers a wide range of genres.

This is a landmark for Leicester Writers' Club, but we hope it will also act as a beacon to people interested in learning what the Club is about and in particular to those considering joining. What's more, it's an excellent read.
